Is NFPA 70B mandatory?

Yes. NFPA 70B was reclassified from a recommended practice to a mandatory standard in the 2023 edition. That changed it from guidance facilities could choose to follow into a standard with enforceable “shall” requirements.

What changed in NFPA 70B?

The biggest change is the shift from recommended guidance to mandatory requirements. The standard now places more emphasis on documented Electrical Maintenance Programs, condition-based maintenance, equipment condition assessments, maintenance intervals, and audit-ready records.

What is an Electrical Maintenance Program?

An Electrical Maintenance Program, or EMP, is the formal documented system for how electrical equipment is inspected, tested, maintained, and replaced. It includes asset inventory, condition assessments, maintenance procedures, maintenance schedules, qualified personnel, record-keeping, and program review.

Does NFPA 70B require thermography?

NFPA 70B requires documented inspection and testing data to support equipment condition assessments. Thermography is one of the most important tools for identifying thermal anomalies, loose connections, overloaded circuits, and other developing electrical issues before failure occurs.

How often do system studies need to be updated?

System studies must be updated at intervals of no more than five years. This includes short-circuit studies, coordination studies, and incident energy analyses. Updates may also be required sooner when major electrical system changes occur.

What records do I need to keep?

Facilities should maintain complete records for equipment inventory, condition assessments, maintenance activities, test results, corrective actions, system studies, and program reviews. The goal is to have documentation that is accurate, retrievable, and audit-ready.
